One Room Challenge Week Six • Guesthouse Reveal

We crossed the finish line for this One Room Challenge! Like barely though. I can’t believe this is our guesthouse! We done did it! Alright, let me walk you through this one room with five looks cause we extra like that! Okrrr! The guesthouse is a little over 300 square feet so I wanted to pack a playful punch in here. I infused the space with a balance of bold colors, pattern, and textures. Here’s a before photo to jog your memory. It was such a sad and neglected space.

And bam! First, we knocked down the wall to open up the space. Then, we added a small bathroom in the far right corner and carved out a window on the left. We also built a kitchenette so our guests can poach some eggs, cause that’s what I would do! Haha! We installed hardwood floors from Overstock over the concrete and that alone warmed up the space. Overstock really came through with our renovation. They have everything you can possibly need for small or big home improvements. And honestly, I think this is better than my own home. My boo and I are thinking of crashing here tonight to test it out and see what else we need to add and touch up. There are still a few things we need to finish up on but overall, I’m so happy with how it turned out!

The kitchenette might be my favorite area. I ordered four 24 inch white shaker cabinets from Overstock and installed a 2x9 white quartz countertop. There is about a 14 inch overhang for seating. I’ve been wanting green cabinets for the longest time so we picked the color Fig Tree with a satin finish from BEHR and painted over the cabinets. We used a foam roller for the outer surface boxes and a paint spray gun for the doors and drawers for a smooth finish. Make sure to use a primer so the paint will stick to the surface. It also takes about a month it to cure so don’t go crazy on the cabinets yet. I’ve already made a few dings on mine. The floating shelf is from Walnut Wood Works. It’s a solid piece of beautiful white oak and it’s 8 feet long so it matches up with the cabinets perfectly. The slim retro fridge is from Big Chill. It adds such a playful vibe to the space. The brass sconces are from Hudson Valley are bigger in person but they add so much drama to the space. I love them and they look great with the hexagon cabinet hardware from Emtek.

On the other side of the kitchenette, I created a living space that was equally rich in color. We went bold with a velvet yellow sofa from Article and toned it down with pillows from SWD Studio, Bolé Road Textiles, and Loloi. I love velvet sofas because depending on the color of the day and the lighting, it color can change. So here, it can go from ochre, saffron, amber, to olive green. The large painterly artwork is from Minted. And we hung it seven inches above the sofa. That’s usually my sweet spot when hanging art above anything, like a headboard, mantle, or table.

And right next to the living area is the bedroom. We picked out a low profile, queen-sized bed from Hayneedle and draped the headboard with indigo fabric designed by Justina Blakeney. Initially, I wanted to staple it to the back of the headboard but I love how it created these folded sides so I kept it that way. Then we paired it with simple oak nightstands and black table lamps from Hudson Valley. I feel like I don’t use black enough in my spaces. The color black definitely adds, how do you say, elegance? And it grounds the space, too. Rug is from Rugs.com.

Got a blank wall and don’t know what to do with it? Hang a bunch of baskets! I feel like you can never go wrong with them. I nailed a dozen Binga baskets on the opposite wall of the bed and it added a much need natural and handmade element to the space.

On the other side of the bed is a relaxing nook we created so guests can cozy up with a book. The rose pink lounge chair is from Article, plug-in sconce from Hudson Valley, and linen roman shades from SelectBlinds.

And finally, the bathroom! This has very similar vibes to our first One Room Challenge dining room, don’t you think? We wanted to bring a piece of our NOLA home to LA and thought this was the perfect little room to do it. This time, we used BEHR’s Lamplit paint color. It’s pretty much the same as Farrow & Ball’s babouche, tbh. For the floors, we picked out Moroccan cement tiles from Overstock. The heartmate wanted something a little more traditional so we chose this antique style vanity. And to bling it up, we went with Delta® Trinsic faucet and showerhead in champagne bronze. The vertical stacked subway tiles took way longer than I thought it would. My dad was so frustrated with them cause they were kinda small (1.75 x 7.75) and were kinda handmade (they’re totally not), which means many of them were different sizes which threw him off in the beginning. But the white grout hid all the imperfections. Honestly, I like some imperfections. And a last minute change, we decided to use shower curtains instead of glass shower doors. The bathroom feels more open and the linen curtain definitely softened up the space.

And that’s a wrap! Hooray! That was a lot to do in just six short weeks and I’m glad we did it because this would’ve taken me months or years to do. I’m such a procrastinator.
