One Room Challenge • Week Two
On this week’s episode of the One Room Challenge, we gon’ get down and dirty with the design plans for our guesthouse. Since this space is separate from our home and mostly for guests, I want it to be really playful and maximal by layering lots of color, prints, and pattern. Wait, I feel like I say that pretty much about every space I do. Haha! Well…let’s get started with my favorite room — the kitchen! This is where I’m dabbing some of that dusty pink and olive colors inspired from my Moroccan photo. Here, I want to keep it open so we’re only installing lower cabinets with a long, floating shelf up top (hopefully one that has a live edge). We’re gonna use cement tiles for backsplash in a black and white diamond pattern. Countertop is going to be a 9 foot quartz with 12 inch overhang so our guest can eat or enjoy a cup of coffee, since there’s no room for a dining table. We’re putting in a small electric cooktop with a 22 inch sink. Let’s be real, none of our guests are gonna cook a Thanksgiving or Chinese New Year meal. I’m still debating over a white or black apartment-size fridge. This sweet kitchenette is pretty much all from Overstock. Sconces are Hudson Valley. The counter stool is Article. Vintage rug from rugs.com. The exact paint colors are tbd. Now, on the opposite side of this kitchen is the living room…
And bedroom! You better believe when I say multifunctional, henny! We are layering patterns and colors up in here! The walls are going to be a creamy white up top and dipped in a sage grey on the bottom. I thought of adding a chair rail but I feel like it’s unnecessary? What are your thoughts? Besides, I don’t think my dad wants me to add anymore projects. I’m driving him bonkers!
I also want to reupholster a bed using Justina Blakeney’s Maile fabric. I’ve been dying to use it on something so now’s my chance. With all the saturated colors, we’re going a bit neutral with the rugs in tan and brown tones from rugs.com. There will be way more plants up in here. Don’t you worry. For now, there’s the Ficus Audrey. They’re hard to find. By putting a plant there it adds a little separation between the bedroom and living room. The sumptuous velvet sofa and chair are from Article. And pillows are from SWD Studio. All the lights are from Hudson Valley. Artworks from Minted. Coffee table is Blu Dot. The bed, side tables, and pendant are from Hayneedle. Paint colors still tbd. We’re sprinkling bits of black to make it feel sophisticated.
On to our next room. Wait, there’s more? I know. So much more! So much to do! Eek! You gotta go big and bold or go home with mold! Okrrr! You feel me?! This is what I have in mind for our bathroom.
It’ll be a small one (5x8) so it’s the perfect place to go maximal. We’re installing black and white Moroccan cement tiles on the floor. Very similar to the ones in our kitchen. Vanity and brass mirror are from Overstock with my fave Delta Faucet. But let’s talk about this amazing wallpaper. Sadly, I just got news that it’s out of stock. Bum-diggity! Gotta figure out plan b for the walls now. We’re creating another walk-in shower to make the space feel more open and installing a small sliding window to add natural light and ventilation. To speed up the process, we’re using a shower basin.
And that’s pretty much it. We’ve ordered all the big ticket items so crossing fingers they arrive soon because we need them! I need to start gathering the smalls like vases, a few more artworks, dishware, flatware, cookware, and glassware to style on that floating shelf, etc.
We started demo last week and removed the wall you see below. It opened everything up. So, way in that back left corner, I’m putting a desk and adding a window to let more natural light in. To the right is where the bathroom will go. Hopefully plumbing will be in the works by the end of this week. We’re not doing any intricate work back here. My dad’s feeling confident about finishing on time so I guess we’re on track! Head back next week to see more progress in our guesthouse! I also wanna say a big thank you to all the ORC sponsors for helping us out!
